The Best Chain Restaurants in California to Whet Your Appetite

These fast-casual restaurants are the new frontier of California fast food chains, from burger joints to taquerias, fried chicken to Sichuan noodles.

Dino’s Famous Chicken

Where they are: Los Angeles
Why you need them: Whether you refer to them as Dino’s Famous Chicken, Dino’s Chicken and Burgers (the chain’s former name), or just Dino’s, this is the spot to get a styrofoam boxed lunch crammed with chicken, freshly cut fries, and a side of sharp garlic paste that ties the whole thing together. The famously red chicken drowned in a seasoning blend dreamt up by founder Demetrios Pantazis that infuses both his Greek heritage and the Latin ingredients found around the original Pico-Union location has been served since the ’80s and remains an iconic Los Angeles plate lunch. Underneath the juicy grilled chicken that comes with flecks of char, the fries soak up the remaining tangy flavors of the marinade to perfection. There are other options on the menu, such as burritos, hot dogs, burgers, and sandwiches, but the star of this family-run chain remains the chicken and fries. May 2, 2023

Pasadena residents can now order their favorites (or discover new ones) at Dino’s Famous Chicken for pick up and delivery from its new Pasadena location at 55 S. Madison Avenue.

“When we had the opportunity — a friend of mine who works for Kitchen United said, ‘we’ve got an opening’  — we jumped on it,” added Nicole. October 19, 2022

There’s more to loaded fries than cheese and pastrami

The fries are the thing at Dino’s. Customers tend to love the DUI fries with pastrami, carne asada, and cheese, though the simpler spiced fries with grilled chicken on top — where the juice runs through and soaks up each fry bite — is the best order of all. September 7, 2022

Dino’s Famous Chicken, the Pico Boulevard legend, is expanding its reach into Pasadena with a new ghost kitchen setup as part of Kitchen United. While not a standalone restaurant, the new outpost should allow the family-owned restaurant to grow its presence in the area — and for fans to score some of that red-tinged, flamed-licked chicken, served over fries. The jump is part of a planned post-ish-pandemic expansion undertaken by the family. August 16, 2022

Dino’s Famous Chicken
is an L.A. institution that dates back more than 50 years, but it only started serving chicken wings ($14 dozen) earlier this year. The family-owned restaurant brought in versatile Secret Lasagna chef Royce Burke to develop the new menu item. Double fried and then tossed in a thickened version of Dino’s garlicky, spicy secret sauce, the double-fried wings yield a flavorful punch and a glorious, shattering crackle when you take a bite. If you’re looking for something a little less saucy, you can order butter-cooked wings, which are equally delicious. 2575 W. Pico Blvd., Pico-Union, and other locations, dinosfamouschicken.com. Dino’s Famous Chicken Considers a Bigger Post-Pandemic Future. But First, Wings.

“It’s a new day at the famed Dino’s Famous Chicken (formerly Dino’s Chicken and Burgers) on Pico Boulevard. Or, rather, will be soon — even though it doesn’t look like much has changed at the 53-year-old restaurant. Fans are still lining up at the takeout window for heaping plates of spiced, grilled chicken served on a bed of fries, or for burgers or pastrami burritos on the quick. But soon the Dino’s universe will shift, ever so slightly, ushering in untold changes as the family-owned company seeks to find a new path forward post-pandemic.

Flame-broiled flavor is king at The Original Dino’s Burgers
